THE A TO Z CHALLENGE 2015: M IS FOR MACARTHUR PARK:

 WELCOME TO HALFWAY THROUGH THE
A TO Z CHALLENGE 2015:
AGAIN I WILL CONTINUE MY THEME OF
CHOOSING A SONG TITLE THEN
WRITE MY OWN POEM:
M is for MACARTHUR PARK:
RECORDED BY RICHARD HARRIS:
A few years ago I visited LA,
My, it was a wonderful time.
I met up with Arlee Bird whilst there (above)
A great man and oh so very kind.

We went on the subway,
Destination Hollywood.
It was a beautiful day,
Me? feeling oh so good.

Twas there we passed MacArthur Park,
The same one I've heard in the song.
I always though it was a ficticious park,
How stupid of me to be wrong.

You see I could never fully understand
The meaning of the words.
Funnily enough I liked the song.
It was really quite absurd.

We had a great day with Arlee,
Memories that will forever remain
I'd love to visit MacArthur Park
If only to leave a cake out in the rain.

  9. What a sweet meeting! I think that's one of the best things to have happen after being in touch via the internet for years.

And thanks for the reminder about Richard Harris. That was a while ago, wasn't it?

  12. Sorry I am late on this one, I am moving. What a mess everything is. I love the song. It was written by a guy whose girlfriend broke up with him. The inspiration for the song was his relationship and breakup with Susie Horton.

In an interview with Newsday magazine in October 2014, Webb explained:

Everything in the song was visible. There's nothing in it that's fabricated. The old men playing checkers by the trees, the cake that was left out in the rain, all of the things that are talked about in the song are things I actually saw. And so it's a kind of musical collage of this whole love affair that kind of went down in MacArthur Park. ... Back then, I was kind of like an emotional machine, like whatever was going on inside me would bubble out of the piano and onto paper.

  13. Thank you Gregg for the history of the song, now perhaps I will understand it next time I hear it.
Also thanks for taking the trouble to visit me again.

  14. Thank you for a great tribute. And with a song that's always been one of my favorites! I have the Richard Harris CD A Tramp Shining. It's really a wonderful collection of tunes. The first copy I owned was a now long gone 8 track cartridge tape.
