A LONESOME COWBOY'S CHRISTMAS:

(another Christmas poem)
A LONESOME COWBOY'S CHRISTMAS:
It's almost Christmas on the range,
This lonely cowboy was travelling home.
Longing to be in the arms of his wife,
Little did he know what there were to come.

He was hot and dusty,
So stopped for a well earned drink.
Tended to his faithful horse,
Being at home was all he could think.

He mounted the pure while steed,
And merrily went on his way.
He needed to cover fifty miles more
Before the end of the day.

At nightfall he set up camp,
Opened a can of beans.
Had a tot of the hard stuff,
Which he kept in his jeans.

He soon fell asleep,
Exhausted from the trials of the day.
He didn't hear the noise
Of horses coming his way.

There were a gang of desperados
Obviously out for no good.
They stole his supply of water,
Also what was left of his food.

He was in the middle of "Nowhere"
Not a ranch or a person in sight.
When he realised what had happened,
During a very long night.

His faithful steed was injured.
So he decided to stay.
They'd been together so long,
Could he leave him?..no way.

It was now Christmas Eve.
By now at home he was due.
He wondered what his wife was doing,
His beautiful wife named Sue.

As the dark of another night fell,
Cold and lonely was he.
Both him and horse was hungry,
And were most very unhappy.

Then he saw a light,
A vision so beautiful.
It was the "Spirit of Christmas"
To rescue him and horse so dutiful.

The vision was in the form of a posse,
Alerted by Sue his wife.
They gave him food and water.
That probably saved his life.

Hours later horse and him arrived home.
To celebrate Christmastide.
He thought how could he have left his faithful friend,
A friend he;d had for a very long time.

  2. Very well written. The poem really pulled me in and I was worried for a bit that there wasn't going to be a happy ending. I could easily picture the scenes you described. Thanks for sharing. :)

  6. Hi Yvonne,

What a heart warming conclusion for the lonely cowboy. Not so alone and understanding the value of a faithful friend. I shall now go and have some beans around the campfire :)

    Be well, my friend.
